Joomla is basically a framework for websites.  When you browse around this site and others that I have worked on, everything you see is handled by one piece of software that runs on the Web Server.  Once you install the framework, you can customize every aspect of how your website looks and works. 

The "look" of your site is controlled by templates.   This gives you unlimited possibilities to change the experience that visitors have.  The content of your site is not affected when you change templates, so you are free to swap templates at will without having to worry about losing everything.  You could imagine the flexibility this allows?  The best part is, once the template is in place, you can log in and change the templates without having to hire someone to redesign your website.  I can suggest several websites to find samples of these if you would like to purchase a custom template.  I have a few templates that I use on a regular basis and with my basic services for getting you on the net, I include a template with custom graphics.

Joomla does not stop with templates.  There are components you can install too.  A component is 3rd party software that you can add to your website to get more out of your web presence.  There is a growing list of software companies that are designing Web 2.0 applications for Content Management Systems like Joomla.  All of the sudden you go from a simple information website that looks pretty to a full blown ecommerce site.  I use ecommerce loosely because I am not talking about just putting a few products in a webstore, I am talking about hosted videos, community sites like MySpace & FaceBook, directory & events, task management & work order tracking, news & media, and the list goes on and on.

Now you have a pretty website that gives you the ability to compete with every website on the net, but what if there was more?  I still have not covered modules and mambots.  A module is a small “box” of information that can be used to bring more content to your website.  Bring advertising opportunities to your site, show the local weather, show a news feed from another site, display the latest videos, etc.  Mambots add another layer of function by running behind the scenes to tackle SEO functions(search engine visibility), embedded media, site statistics and more.
